About Flutter
Flutter is a one-tap flying game. Your round yellow bird wants to fly forever, but gravity keeps pulling it down, and the sky is full of green pipes with narrow gaps between them. Tap to flap, slip through each gap, and see how many pipes you can pass before you bump one. A run takes seconds; getting good takes a little longer.
Also called: flappy style game, tap bird game, flying bird game.
How to play Flutter
- Tap anywhere on the sky, click, or press Space or the Up arrow to start. The bird takes off with its first flap.
- Every tap is one flap: a quick hop upward. Between taps, gravity pulls the bird down, faster the longer it falls.
- Pipes come from the right in pairs, one from the top and one from the bottom. Fly through the gap between them.
- You score one point for every pair of pipes you pass.
- The run ends if the bird touches a pipe or the ground. The result card shows your score, your best and any medal. Press Space, or tap Play again, to go straight back in.
- Press P or the pause button to pause. The game also pauses by itself when you switch tabs.
Rules
- A flap always gives the same lift, however fast the bird is falling, so a tap in a steep drop catches it straight away.
- The bird falls faster the longer it drops, up to a top speed.
- The top of the sky stops the bird but doesn't end the run. You can't sneak over the pipes that way, because every top pipe reaches right up to it.
- Touching a pipe or the ground ends the run. The bird's hit area is a circle a little smaller than the drawing, so a feather brushing a pipe is forgiven.
- The pipes are evenly spaced, and each gap is always within reach of the one before, at the speed you will be flying when you get there.
- The pipes scroll a tiny bit faster with every point, up to a top speed at 50.
- Medals: bronze at 10 points, silver at 25, gold at 50. Your best score is saved in your browser.
Flutter tips and strategy
- Tap little and often. Short, steady taps keep the bird level. Big gaps between taps lead to big drops that are hard to catch.
- Aim low in the gap. A flap lifts you a fixed amount, so sitting near the bottom of a gap gives you room to flap without touching the top pipe.
- Look at the next gap, not at the bird. As soon as you clear one pipe, start moving toward the height of the next.
- For a big drop, stop tapping as you leave a pipe and let the bird fall, then catch it with a tap as it reaches the gap.
- Find a rhythm. The pipes are evenly spaced, so the same tap pattern works again and again when the gaps line up.
- After a crash, take a breath before the next run. Tired, twitchy taps are the main reason runs end early.
Flutter questions
How do I play Flutter on my phone?
Tap anywhere on the sky to flap. The page won't scroll or zoom while you tap on the game, and the play area is sized to fit your screen, so you can play one-handed.
Why did I crash when I barely touched the pipe?
The bird's hit area is a circle slightly smaller than its drawing, so small grazes are already forgiven. If the pipe overlapped the middle of the bird, it counts. Flying a little lower in the gap gives you more room above.
Does the game get harder?
Only a little. The pipes scroll very slightly faster with every point until you reach 50, and then stay at that speed. The gaps never get narrower, and every gap is always reachable from the one before.
Is my best score saved?
Yes. Your best score and the number of runs you have played are kept in your browser on this device. A run in progress isn't saved; it pauses if you switch tabs.
Is Flutter free to play?
Yes. Flutter on Kultured Arcade is completely free: no download, no account and nothing to buy. It runs in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer.
Do I need to download Flutter?
No. It opens instantly in your browser and saves your progress on your device, so there is nothing to install and no sign-up.
