About Blobs Online
Play Blobs live with other people. Quick play drops you into a public arena, and Make a room gives you a private one with an invite link and code for friends. Everyone eats, splits and runs at once, and bots keep the arena busy.
Blobs is a free arena game about one simple idea: big eats small. You start as a tiny blob in a big square arena shared with fourteen others. Eat the pellets scattered on the floor to grow, swallow any blob that is clearly smaller than you, and keep well away from anything bigger. The larger you get, the slower you move, so staying on top takes more than size.
Also called: cell eating game, blob io, agar style game.
How to play Blobs
- Press Play. Your blob is the white one called You, and it drifts toward your mouse pointer. On a phone, put a finger down anywhere on the arena and drag: it works like a joystick, and your blob keeps going the way you last pushed.
- Roll over the little coloured pellets to eat them. Every pellet adds a little mass, and more mass means a bigger blob.
- Cover a blob that is at least a quarter smaller than you to swallow it and take all its mass. Anything a quarter bigger than you can do the same to you.
- Press Space (or the Split button) to split: every piece big enough halves, and the new halves shoot forward. It is the fastest way to catch a runaway blob.
- Press W (or the Eject button) to throw a little mass forward. Hold it to throw more.
- If your last piece is eaten, the round is over and you see your top mass, best rank, blobs eaten and time alive. Press Play again to jump straight back in.
Rules
- Your size is your mass. A blob's radius grows with the square root of its mass, so doubling in size takes four times the food.
- Bigger blobs are slower. A fresh blob is quick; a giant crawls.
- To eat another blob it must weigh at most three quarters of your piece, and its centre must be well inside you. Just touching or overlapping the edge is not enough.
- Splitting halves every piece that weighs at least 36, up to eight pieces in all. Pieces can't merge back together for a while: at least eight seconds, and longer for heavier pieces. Until then they bump against each other.
- Ejecting costs 16 mass and throws a 12-mass blob that anyone big enough can eat, including you after a moment. You need at least 36 mass in a piece to eject from it.
- The green spiky thorns are safe for small blobs, which can even hide underneath them. A blob big enough to swallow one bursts into up to eight pieces.
- Very big blobs slowly lose mass over time, so nobody stays huge forever.
- Eaten pellets grow back, and bots that get eaten come back a few seconds later.
- The game pauses by itself when you switch tabs or windows. Press P or Escape to pause yourself.
Blobs tips and strategy
- Graze early. Pellets are safe mass. Sweep through busy patches while you are small and quick, and leave the chasing for later.
- Watch the colours around you, not just the one you are chasing. Anything bigger than you can split and lunge at you from further away than you think.
- Split only when the half-size piece will still be big enough to eat your target and the target is right in front of you. A missed split leaves two small pieces that are easy to eat.
- After a split you are at your weakest until your pieces merge. Steer away from bigger blobs and let the pieces come back together.
- Small and hunted? Slip under a thorn. Nothing big can follow you in without bursting.
- Use the walls. A blob trapped in a corner has nowhere to run, and that works both ways.
- Mass thrown with Eject is worth twelve pellets, so scoop up any you see lying around.
Blobs questions
Who am I playing against?
Fourteen computer blobs with their own names and habits. Some are bold and split-attack often, others are cautious and run early. They react with a short human-like delay, graze pellets, chase smaller blobs, run from bigger ones and come back after being eaten. On the Online tab you can also play live against other people, with bots making up the numbers.
Why can't I eat a blob that is only a little smaller than me?
You need to be clearly bigger: your victim must weigh no more than three quarters of your piece. It also has to be mostly covered, with its centre well inside your blob. That keeps two blobs of about the same size safe from each other.
How do I merge my pieces back together?
Just wait and keep steering. Split pieces can't join for at least eight seconds, a bit longer for heavy pieces, and then they drift together and merge on their own.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes. Put a finger down anywhere on the arena and drag to steer, like a joystick. The Split and Eject buttons sit in the bottom corner. The page doesn't scroll while you drag on the arena.
Is my best score saved?
Your best top mass is saved in your browser, so it is still there next time. A round in progress isn't saved; the game pauses when you leave the tab.
Can I play Blobs with friends?
Yes. Open the Online tab and choose Make a room to get a link and a six-character code for up to ten people, or Play now to join a public room. Everyone gets their own colour, and bots fill the arena around the people in it. A live game cannot be paused, so your blob keeps drifting if you switch tabs.
Is Blobs free to play?
Yes. Blobs on Kultured Arcade is completely free: no download, no account and nothing to buy. It runs in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer.
Do I need to download Blobs?
No. It opens instantly in your browser and saves your progress on your device, so there is nothing to install and no sign-up.
